An Inspector Calls

Thursday, January 18, 2007 - Market Place Theatre

An Inspector Calls by J B Priestley was performed in the main auditorium of The Market Place Theatre, Armagh in January 2007.

An Inspector Calls, one of Priestley’s best known works, is set in the home of a prosperous Midlands industrialist in 1912. At first sight it has all the hallmarks of a conventional thriller - but nothing is quite what it seems. Priestley wrote the play in 1945 and encapsulated the spirit of that time when the Second World War had just ended and visions of social responsibility were undergoing a massive sea change in Britain.

Director Peter Kelly has assembled a strong and experienced cast. Industrialist Arthur Birling and his wife Sybil are played by theatre group stalwarts Malcolm Dawson and Madeleine Kelly. The Birling children, Sheila and Eric are played by newcomer to the group Stephanie Lavery and by Gerry McGrath who enjoyed his first role with the group last year in Death of a Salesman. Gerald Croft, Sheila’s fiancé, is played by another familiar face, Andrew Rennie and Edna the maid by Aisling Kelly who can’t keep away from the stage having taken part in Tea in a China Cup just last month.. And last but not least is Inspector Goole played by Chris Flight whom we are delighted to have back in “the fold”.

Last year’s production of Death of a Salesman was a complete sell out. It is not the intention to spread panic in the theatre going public but, at the time of going to press, Thursday night’s performance has already sold out and sales are going well for the other 2 nights! The Theatre Group are thrilled that the Armagh public are so supportive and are confident this latest production will not disappoint.
